Woman of the Year

Jacket: Vintage ; Button down: Banana Republic ; Crops pants: Ann Taylor (here) ; Shoes: Cinderella of Boston

The other day I got a text from my mother that read, "I got you a pair of pants." My mother hasn't bought me clothes since my first babysitting gig and I could thus pay for them myself (school uniform, aside). And my mother hasn't picked something out for me without my approval since I was about 6. I was hesitant. Would they fit? Would they be weird enough? Would they be too weird? Would they be my style? I pulled them out of the bag to be pleasantly surprised and even quite excited - a lush crop style pant cut in silky stripes. They're more like wearing pajamas than pants, but they're chic enough to wear to the office.

My mum recently opened an Ann Taylor credit card and is now checking they're window displays often. These slacks (I have a love/hate relationship with that word) were in the window on clearance, so my mum sped in to buy them for me in a 00 Petite. Despite them being such a small size, they're too large for me and so I have the waist safety-pinned smaller. They're still on clearance at Ann Taylor online, and I totally recommend picking up a pair if you're looking for a snazzy new piece for your office wardrobe. Just know that they run large - other reviews online confirm that!

I was channeling some Audrey Hepburn vibes with this outfit (Happy 85th, Audrey!) and went for a snappy little button down for some boyish gamine charm. Flats would have been more appropriate for a Hepburn-esque look, but I long ago found out that my child-sized feet are much too narrow for flats (even children's flats!). Cinderella of Boston shoes it is, and these ones have lovely little leather accents.

Oh, and of course a weathered, fringed leather jacket was necessary because it's me and I cannot be too much of a single thing without feeling out of sorts. I can channel Hepburn so long as I can throw some '70s rockstar in there as well.

How would you wear these pants? This is the only outfit I've figured out so far and I'm looking for some inspiration!

I hope your May is off to a great start! I've been on the couch with a dreadful headache all day (Harry Potter marathon is currently underway), but the sun is supposed to be out all week and I'm looking forward to soaking in some of that Vitamin D.

  1. Those pants are cute! The fringe jacket though... omg to die for! I have been on the hunt for a fringey jacket like that forever. I keep hoping one will turn up at the thrift store but no such luck so far. I may just have to bite the bullet and buy one on etsy or something. Is yours vintage?

    1. Hey Mariel! Yes, it's vintage! I found it at one of my fave vintage stores many years ago but it was expensive so I didn't buy it. Fast forward a few years later and the vintage store was going out of business. I stopped in for a 75% off sale and the jacket was still there! I can't remember exactly what I paid for it, but it was somewhere around $25. It's my go-to now. It sheds little bits of leather quite a lot, but it's so bad ass, I don't even care!

  2. Haha I would be so sad if I had tiny feet along with my short body. My sister has really small feet so I hear about her struggles quite a bit. These pants your mom picked out are awesome though! I love the cool 70s colors in the stripes and how casual, yet cool this outfit looks. I think you styled them perfectly and you can always have the waist taken in later so you don't have to safety pin them!

    1. On one hand, small feet are a struggle. On the other, I'd have waaaay too many shoes if I wore adult sizes. Where does your sister find her shoes?

  3. Your mum actually considered what you liked to wear as a kid? Jealous. My mum would get stuff for us and we were to wear it with no complaints. Damn those matching sailor outfits...I would wear those trousers with a black shirt/top much the same as you did, they are colourful enough to wear with something neutral but I have to admit, the jacket is not my thing at all

    1. Yeah I've been picking out my own outfits since I was 3 or 4! I wore some pretty wacky stuff back in the day (still do, I guess). The velour bell bottom with matching velour turtle neck phase I went through in 3rd grade was quite the thing....

  4. For summer:
Style the pants with wedge sandals, a tank, and a statement necklace. Add a head scarf and cuff bracelet for a full boho look!
